CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Montgomery County officials held a Topping Out Ceremony for the new “Downtown Commons” Thursday. It was announced that Downtown Commons is the new name of what has often been called the civic plaza since the project was launched last year.

Over 100 people gathered at the site of the project, surrounded by 2nd St, Legion St., 3rd St., and Main St., for the ceremony which symbolizes the last steel beam placed on a structure. Everyone at the site was invited to sign the beam before it was put into place.

Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett talked about the Downtown Commons project. “This facility is a tool that will be used to continue the revitalization of the downtown community and contribute tax dollars for years to come,” said Durrett.

Durrett added that the name, Downtown Commons, is significant and intentional to the purpose of the facility. The word commons means a gathering place or a piece of land used by the people in the community. “Our vision all along is that this space will be a place in the community where there is something for everyone,” Durrett said.

The wet weather over the past couple of weeks has slowed construction on the project, but it’s hoped the Downtown Commons will be ready for the public to enjoy by the middle of November.
