CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) On this Veterans Day, what better way to thank a veteran than to salute our latest Hometown Hero, Mike Flood, a veteran, who is the founder and chairman of Screaming Eagle Honor Flight.
The Screaming Eagle Honor Flights take veterans to Washington D.C. to see their memorials with no charge to the veteran. The first flight was in January of 2014, the latest and sixth flight was in September of this year and another is planned for 2017 in May.
“Those memorials in Washington D.C. belong to those veterans like myself and without the honor flights the chances of them seeing them are slim to none,” Flood said. Most of the veterans are from the WWII era and the Department of Veterans Affairs says and estimated 640 WWII vets die each year.
He added this about his passion for Screaming Eagle Honor Flight. When one of our veteran heroes, who saw more in 4 years than I did in 26 years, looks at you with tears in his eyes and says thanks for one of the best days in my life, it will change your life.
To get involved with Screaming Eagle Honor Flight, you can become a volunteer or a guardian which is a veteran’s escort which costs $400 to escort a veteran to Washington D.C. Monetary donations are accepted at any Planters Bank location or visit screamingeaglehf.org to donate.
For his Hometown Hero recognition, Flood wants his $400 prize money to go to the next Screaming Eagle Honor Flight. He is a proud veteran who retired from the U.S. Army at Fort Campbell in 2001 after a 26 year career and saw service in Bosnia, Grenada and Somalia.
Flood was nominated by Lindsey Adams who he said has a special place in his heart. He thanked everyone who voted for him as the Hometown Hero for October. “It feels great to be recognized for anything. It’s an honor, there’s a lot of people in Clarksville who are heroes,” said Flood.
Nominations for Hometown Hero for November are going on now through November 13 with voting to determine the final winner taking place November 14-November 30. A $400 monthly prize is given to the Hometown Hero with the most votes.
