CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Clarksville community is invited to join a virtual walk in support of fighting blindness. VisionWalk, normally a national event, will be held online this year due to COVID restrictions.

On June 6, participants from across the nation will join together “to show our united, unwavering commitment to the Foundation Fighting Blindness’ mission” according to the event’s website.

The organization is committed to finding treatments and cures for blinding retinal diseases.

More than 250 million people are visually impaired worldwide, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Of these cases, about 80 percent of them could have been avoided or cured.

That’s why regular eye exams are so important. A checkup can be particularly helpful in detecting progressive eye conditions, such as glaucoma, a common condition that typically has few symptoms in its early stages.

Some people may experience symptoms such as a change in vision or eye pain that require immediate medical attention. If you experience any of these following symptoms, see an eye doctor right away:

1. Flashing Lights, Floaters, or a Gray Shadow in Your Vision.
2. Sudden Loss of Vision in One Eye.
3. Eye Pain.
4. Persistent Discomfort in the Eye.
5. Red Eye.
6. Blurred Vision.
7. Eye Surgery Complication.

Even if a symptom goes away, scheduling an eye appointment with a specialist can rule out any potential complications later on down the road.
