CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Tennessee Commissioner of Education Penny Schwinn, and members of the Tennessee Department of Education were in in Clarksville Thursday at Rossview High School for a roundtable discussion on summer learning opportunities.
In this stop on the Accelerating TN Tour, Schwinn met with Interim Director of Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools Angela Huff, along with other local education leaders, joined by state Sen. Bill Powers and state Rep. Jason Hodges.
Clarksville-Montgomery County Schools has seen nearly 20 percent of students participating in summer programs introduced this year in part to make up for learning loss brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Along with around 1,500 CMCSS students taking advantage of in-person learning, more than 5,000 students are using Imagine Learning, which is an adaptive program that tracks a student’s skills, with their progress monitored each week, and with assistance available if a student needs it.
One of the community partnerships mentioned at the roundtable involved schools and the City Parks & Recreation Department, which provides programs that cover the requirements of physical activity for students.
“This was our opportunity to share the good things that are going on in our programs, and our secondary options for our students. Also, to be able to highlight our internal and external partnerships that we have with our community.,” Huff said.
Huff added that it was also good for the commissioner to hear about any challenges our school system is experiencing or any of the things we would like for her to consider as it relates to CMCSS.
After the meeting, Schwinn commented on the work of local educators.
“We’ve been thrilled to have been learning about the best practices and how the state can be supportive and really talking with folks like we have here who are doing excellent work providing engaging opportunities for students, and getting us into the next school year ready to go and continue to move forward,” Schwinn said.
The Accelerating TN 2021 Tour has been on the road over the past three weeks visiting 50 school districts across Tennessee to learn more about how schools are accelerating student achievement.
