CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Clarksville Greyhounds Youth Football League held their homecoming Saturday, October 5 at Northeast High School and the day was special for more than just celebrating homecoming. The teams were recognizing the memory of league president, Toni Johnson, who recently lost her life to cancer.

Makeba Webb, Cheer Coordinator for the league, talked about the event. “What we are doing today is having a day to bring awareness to different cancers. We lost our leader on September 19, Mrs. Toni Johnson, to colon cancer. She was diagnosed last year and after her diagnosis she really began to concentrate on cancer research efforts,” said Webb.

Webb added that Johnson’s dream for homecoming this year was to have every team represented with different colors and proceeds from the event were going to be used as a fundraiser supporting childhood cancer research. Many volunteers and parents involved with the league this season are also wearing shirts that say “We Wear for our Hero Toni Johnson.”

Each of the 6 teams in the league who range in age from 5 to 14 wore a different color representing a type of cancer. Pink was for breast cancer, orange for leukemia and liver cancer and blue for colon cancer which claimed the life of Johnson. The event also hosted an Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser.
