NASHVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has released reports for school crimes and domestic violence statistics. Across the state, the number of offenses reported on a school campus have increased 13.9% from 2016 to 2018. However, the number of domestic-related offensives have decreased 5.8% from 2017 to 2018.
The 2018 School Crime Study reports the nature, volume, and extent of reported crimes on school campuses. The report does not include colleges and universities. Crimes reported include three categories. Those against victims such as assault, rape, and stalking. Crimes against property such as robbery, bribery, or burglary. Finally crimes against society such as gambling, weapon violations, and drug violations.
In 2018, simple assault topped the list with the most reported offense at 1,549 occurrences. The report shows September was the month with the highest frequency of reported school crimes. Most crimes were also reported to occur on Thursday. Males contributed to 58.4% of the offender total and females 27.2%. The remaining 14.4% had unknown or missing genders in the report.
The TBI reports the use of hands, feet, or other body part was the most used weapon in the reported school crimes.
Of the 28,777 reported offenses between 2016 and 2018, 1,293 (32%) involved a firearm, dangerous weapon, which the TBI classifies as a knife or blunt object, or fire or explosives.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE IN TENNESSEE
According to the TBI’s report on domestic violence, a total of 73,568 offenses were marked as domestic related in 2018. This number has decreased 5.8% from 2017 to 2018. The TBI reports females were three times more times likely to be victimized than males. Females account for 71.1% of all domestic violence victims. The most common relationship between victim and offender was boyfriend and girlfriend.
Simple assault made the top of the list as the most common offense with 49,455 offenses in 2018.
Domestic violence resulted in 98 murders in the state.
Officials report because of the complex interpersonal relationships that come with domestic violence, it is difficult at times for law enforcement officers to make an arrest for these offenses.
Both studies are based on data submitted to the TBI through an incident based reporting system. The reporting system collects data on all crime occurring in Tennessee. All law enforcement agencies are required to report these crime statics to the TBI.
