CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – After conducting an investigation, the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System (CMCSS) has determined that student involvement played a part in a woman and her infant falling into a storm drain Thursday, Dec. 6.

CMCSS spokesperson Elise Shelton said the storm drain is located on the Rossview High School campus on Cardinal Lane. Shelton said there is no evidence of structural failure of the drain grate, which was inspected Nov. 13 as part of routine monthly maintenance. At that time the drain grate was intact, according to Shelton.

She said investigators have evidence that there was student involvement in the missing grate. Due to privacy issues, further information about the student(s) will not be released.

“CMCSS also has information that the missing grate was observed in hours prior to the event Thursday night, and it had been reported to the school’s front office. That portion of the investigation is pending,” Shelton said. “Director of Schools Millard House continues to follow the progress of the mother involved in the accident, and hopes for a full recovery.”

The woman and baby fell approximately 20 feet into the storm drain and came to rest at the bottom, according to Clarksville police. A passerby heard the baby crying in the drain and called 911. Emergency personnel were able to pull the woman and her child to safety.

The woman was transported by LifeFlight to a Nashville hospital. The extent of her injuries are unknown, but she was conscious, and had no visible signs of serious injury, according to police. The infant had an abrasion but did not appear to have any life-threatening injuries and was transported by ambulance to Tennova.

No further information is available at this time.
