CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Rashidah Leverett has announced she is running for re-election to the Montgomery County Commission, District 5.

Leverett, who is running for the Democratic nomination, is a 23-year resident of the district. She served in the Army from 1992 to 1999 as a unit supply specialist and was honorably discharged at the rank of sergeant.

She has a doctorate in Organizational Leadership and works as a professor of Leadership and Social Justice at Fisk University in Nashville.

Since being elected to the County Commission in 2018, she has served as chair of the Jail and Juvenile Committee, and the Legislative Liaison Committee. She has served as a member on the Budget Committee, Personnel Advisory Board, Board of Zoning and Appeals, Purchasing Committee, Public Safety Training Complex Committee, and Loss Control Committee.

Leverett brought attention to safety issues affecting the children at Norman Smith Elementary School to cover a dilapidated pool near the playground. She sponsored legislation making Montgomery County the second in Tennessee to adopt Juneteenth as a paid holiday for county employees.

“I want to continue to support the vision of where our county will be in the next few years,” Leverett said. “The residents of District 5, whether they live downtown, on Madison Street or Summit Heights, will know I am working for them. They can be confident that they have someone who will voice their concerns about growth, infrastructure and overall livelihood in Montgomery County. I know them, I talk to them in Kroger or Five Points Market, I listen to their concerns and their aspirations.”

District 5 covers downtown Clarksville, from the Red River south to roughly Hickory Grove Boulevard/Woodmont Boulevard/Paradise Hill Road, and from the Cumberland River east roughly to the Golf Club Lane area.

Leverett is on the board for Habitat for Humanity of Montgomery County, Leadership Clarksville, and Montgomery County Foster Care Review Board.
