CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The City of Clarksville and Montgomery County Government is asking for the public’s help in voicing concern about the potential drawdown of Fort Campbell personnel through the 2016 sequestration.
Both local, state and national lawmakers and other officials were represented at a press conference Monday, August 11 saying that the public’s voices must be heard to keep financial and personnel cuts at Fort Campbell to a minimum.
The public is being encouraged to help spread the word because the more letters of support that are received, the better. State Representative Joe Pitts talked about public involvement. “We absolutely have to be engaged. Every citizen needs to take a moment and send a letter or make a phone call to save Fort Campbell,” said Pitts.
In a press release, newly elected Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett talked about the importance of the public becoming involved. “I strongly believe, that we as a community, must speak out and be heard about this issue. Fort Campbell is vital to our community, our state and to our nation. We must let the folks with the Department of Defense know how we feel about this potential loss to our community,” said Durrett.
Time is running out for the public comment period by the United States Army Environmental Command which is looking at the reduction of active duty troop strength. All public comments must be submitted by Monday, August 25.
