NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) – Metro Nashville police are investigating after a Wal-Mart security guard shot a man accused of shoplifting beer and dog food.

According to a police news release, 21-year-old DeMarko Peoples left an East Nashville store around 11:30 p.m. on Thursday and ran to a waiting car.

Guard Michael Williams told detectives he ordered Peoples to exit the vehicle, but instead Peoples put the car in drive. Williams said he had to step away from the vehicle to avoid being struck.

Police say Williams’ gun discharged, and the bullet shattered the rear driver’s side window and struck Peoples. The circumstances of the discharge are still under investigation.

Peoples was listed in critical but stable condition at Skyline Medical Center on Friday afternoon.

The investigation is ongoing, and no charges have been filed.
