CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) Close to 200 people filled the Clarksville-Montgomery County Public Library Wednesday evening for the On Wings of Love memorial ceremony. It was the 20th year for the event, organized by the office of the 19th Judicial District Attorney General to remember victims of homicide.
Family members and friends who have lost loved ones to violence placed ornaments, many they made themselves on a Christmas tree inside the library. Each person or family stepped up and announced who the ornament was in memory of. Volunteers and law enforcement personnel with the Clarksville Police Department and Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office also placed ornaments on the tree.
District Attorney General John Carney talked about the On Wings of Love ceremony. “I think it means a lot to the community. I know it means a lot to the relatives of those loved ones that have been killed. Every year the numbers of homicide victims increase and that’s one thing that’s very, very sad about these programs, is that those lists continue to get longer,” Carney said.
The program also featured the founder of On Wings of Love Susan Marks, Montgomery County Mayor Jim Durrett, and Fairlen Browning, with the local chapter of Parents of Murdered Children. Also attending the ceremony were Clarksville Mayor Kim McMillan and Montgomery County Sheriff John Fuson who placed ornaments on the tree.
