Fort Campbell. KY. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) It may have been cold for 92 soldiers stepping off the plane Thursday night but they warmed up quickly after they were welcomed home by their family and friends inside the hangar at Campbell Army Airfield.

The soldiers, with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion and the 101st Combat Aviation Brigade of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), returned from a nine-month deployment to Afghanistan.

Lt. Colonel Martin O’Donnell, 101st Public Affairs Officer, was one of those who came home and he talked about their mission. “At it’s heart, defending the nation, that’s why we’re still there in Afghanistan after all these years. There’s still a threat to the homeland here, terrorists haven’t been able to plot an attack on us since September 11 2001, so that is absolutely why we’re there, to defend the homeland,” O’Donnell said.

Details are being finalized for another Welcome Home Ceremony for approximately 100 soldiers which is tentatively scheduled for next weekend at Fort Campbell.
