CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The aisles of the Walmart on Madison Street in Sango were filled with smiling children Saturday as families enjoyed a special holiday treat when they spent time shopping at the annual Christmas with a Cop.
The event was formerly known as Shop with a Cop and more than 60 members of local law enforcement helped each child spend $100, in of course toys, as well as clothing and other items.
Detective Dennis Honholt with the Clarksville Police Department led the organization of the event that included officers with the department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Deputies, Austin Peay Campus Police, the Clarksville Police Department Explorers Program and volunteers from Citizens Police Academy Alumni.
Members of law enforcement also shopped for over 20 other children who could not make the Saturday morning event.
“We have been blessed to be able to provide services, both as police officers and as caretakers, to such a wonderful community and it’s because of the residents and businesses in Montgomery County, who give so generously, that events like this are made possible,” Honholt said.
“It’s also because of the kind hearts of the officers, and the residents that we serve that so many children will have a Christmas this year that otherwise would not,” he added. “It has truly been a privilege to host such a wonderful event for all of us and we look forward to next year.”
The children for the Christmas with a Cop program are chosen by members of local law enforcement and other emergency services like fire and medical services along with school counselors from the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System.
