CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – You can imagine it’s a bit difficult for many nurses to celebrate National Nurses Week, now through May 12, because they are so busy working with the fight against COVID-19.

Clarksville Now recently spoke with Esther Andrews, a Registered Nurse who works at Premier Medical Group who handles the triage of patients at Premier.  Andrews said talks with the patients when they come in and decides where they need to go for the best treatment for their needs.

Andrews has been a nurse for 12 years and has been with Premier for the past year-and-a-half, and talked about how the COVID-19 has affected her work as a nurse.

“It has changed a lot because currently I am working with the nurse practitioners doing the COVID testing,” Andrews said

“We have what we call a COVID tent, the patients come in and if they meet the criteria of what we screen them for, as far as symptoms of COVID, we have a COVID team and we send the case to them and if they say it’s okay for the patient to be tested we send them to the tent.”

Andrews added that the nurse practitioner will swab the patient for COVID and then she will get all of the information involving the test ready to be picked up by the lab.

When asked why she wanted to be a nurse Andrews said it was something that she actually began thinking about when she assisted her nurse in high school and the nurse told her that one day, she would be a really good nurse.

Andrews came to the U.S. in 2004 and her mother-in-law told stories about the work she had done as a nurse in an emergency room for over 30 years.  “She would tell stories about what she did and how she took care of the patients and this would be something for me to do because I like to help people,” Andrews said.

Andrews said nursing is very rewarding because when you are taking care of people you get to see the results and that is very fulfilling for her and she enjoys it very much.
