CLARKSVILLE, TN – Want to learn how to plant, care for, and protect trees – and put those skills to work in the Clarksville-Montgomery County community? This fall, Replant Clarksville will offer the Tennessee Tree Stewards Course, a hands-on training program for people who want to become knowledgeable and effective volunteers for our community’s trees.

Participants will learn how trees grow, how to identify common species, select the right tree for the right location, properly plant and care for trees, recognize pests and diseases, combat invasive species, and prune young trees. The course will also prepare participants to assist with and lead community tree-planting and tree-care projects. No professional background in forestry or horticulture is required; the program is designed for people who want to learn and get involved.

Classes will be taught by local experts in arboriculture, urban forestry, horticulture, and biology, including ISA Certified Arborists and professionals from Austin Peay State University, Montgomery County, and the City of Clarksville. Replant Clarksville is coordinating the local program with support from the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council and Tennessee Division of Forestry.

The course meets Thursday evenings, Sept. 10 through Oct. 22, from 6-8:30 p.m. on the Austin Peay State University campus, with an optional Saturday demonstration on Oct. 17. The $150 registration fee includes course materials and a one-year membership in the Tennessee Urban Forestry Council. Class size is limited to 20 participants.

Participants who complete the course requirements and at least 20 hours of approved volunteer service within the following year can earn the Certified Tennessee Tree Steward credential. Volunteer opportunities can include community tree plantings, tree-care projects, and public education activities.
