CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (Clarksvillenow.com) The Montgomery County Veterans Service Organization (VSO) along with Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 4895, held their annual Flag Day Retirement Ceremony at the VFW Post, 1701 Haynes Street. Hundreds of damaged or otherwise unserviceable American flags were disposed of.
Stacey Hopwood, Assistant Director of the Montgomery County Veterans Service Organization, talked about flag retirement. “The Flag Code is the U.S. Code that governs the proper display and respect of our flag. It dictates that the flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” said Hopwood.
Firefighters from Clarksville Fire Rescue Station #3 were also on hand for the ceremony as a safety precaution. Damaged U.S. Flags can be dropped off between 8 a.m. & 4:30 p.m.. Monday-Friday, at the VSO office, 350 Pageant Lane, Suite 308, at Veterans Plaza in Clarksville or VFW Post 4895 for future retirement ceremonies.
