WASHINGTON – Representatives from the Department of Defense (DOD), U.S. military services, and U.S. Special Operations Command will hold a press conference Tuesday, June 18, to discuss the process of opening up special operations positions to women, according to DOD’s web site.

Army Rangers and Navy SEALS positions have previously been open only to men. In January 2013, the commander of U.S. Special Operations command said officials were studying how best to plan for the opening of these positions in a way that benefits both genders.

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced the end of the direct ground combat exclusion rule for female service members in January 2013.
