Tennessee Heartwood is hosting its second annual Land Between the Lakes Labor Day Weekend Adventures, where participants can learn about and explore LBL on land and water, its wildlife, history and special places.
Saturday, Sept. 4: Hiking Panther Creek/Devil’s Backbone. 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Free nature walk in Panther Creek/Devil’s Backbone followed by a look at LBL prairie remnants (meet at the South Welcome Center), led by Tennessee State Naturalist Randy Hedgepath, according to a news release.
“Besides being a nice mixed hardwood forest, we will spend some time at a beaver-engineered wet meadow (the beavers have moved on). Habitats like wet meadows don’t often get the attention they deserve, but we’re going to showcase this special habitat,” the release said. “After a lunch break, we will drive up the Trace Road to look at some remnants of historic prairie habitat. The pace will be relaxed, and this is a great opportunity to learn the diverse life of the LBL.”
Sunday, Sept. 5 Kayaking Long Creek from Hematite Lake to Honker Lake. 10 a.m.-4 p.m.
Local outdoor enthusiast David Nickell will lead a trip with lots of wildlife viewing opportunities. Meet at the intersection of Mulberry Flats Road and the Trace road. There’s plenty of parking at Hematite Lake.
“Space is limited to ensure that we don’t have too many kayaks at once on the creek so please contact us to let us know you are coming and to get a spot,” the release said. “Check out one of our two great outings or do them both.”
There’s free camping available from Friday-Sunday nearby for those who would like to. Call ahead if interested.
Campers can join in on a Saturday morning early yoga session with Anna Lynn McCurdy at the campsite, starting at 7:30 a.m.
Due to COVID concerns, we request that folks “keep the distance” and we recommend mask use.
