CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The second day of the District 13-4A baseball tournament had all the drama, storylines and rivalries you could ask for. The Kirkwood Cobras kicked off Thursday with their first win in the district tournament in program history, ending Northeast’s season, and Clarksville came back from a four-run, seven-inning deficit to walk off Rossview, sending them to the district title.

Kirkwood has dominating win over Northeast

The game started as a pitcher’s duel, with Northeast’s Cameron Skaggs and Kirkwood’s Cole Wethington combining for four innings of shutout baseball. In the top of the fifth, however, the Cobras scratched across six to seize momentum, with Alex Rosenberger and Jon Dirks each driving in two runs in the inning. Northeast got one across to respond in the fifth, but that was all they could manage, as Wethington nearly went the distance, pitching 6.2 innings and only allowing four hits, while striking out eight.

The Cobras got three more across in the seventh for insurance, and closed the deal for their first win in the district tournament in program history. The loss ended the Eagles’ season, and now Kirkwood sets their sights on another elimination game on Friday at 4 p.m.

“Very pleased with the way we played,” said Cobras head coach Rick Yauger. “This is a sign of the program building and changing. It feels good, and I’m really happy for these guys; they’ve worked really hard and come a long way, and they’ve earned this.”

Clarksville late game theatrics walk off Rossview

The Wildcats entered the bottom of the seventh inning down 6-2 to Rossview on Thursday night, largely impacted by a five-run third inning by the Hawks. However, the Wildcats are known for late-game theatrics, and this one was no different. The Wildcats loaded the bases with one out only down two thanks to an RBI single from catcher Jaxon Reese, and after a balk, the District 13-4A MVP Keaton Anderson delivered the biggest hit of the night, scoring two runs and giving the Wildcats a 7-6 win.

The Wildcats now advance to the district title game and secure a spot in the region tournament. As for Rossview, they will play Kirkwood in an elimination game on Friday at 4:00 PM.

“We told our guys we just had to stay in that game,” said Wildcats head coach Brian Hetland. “We played some really sound defense, and the guys that got on in the seventh inning were absolutely huge at-bats. We just kept ourselves alive and got it done. It’s a great win and a great feeling for our guys. It’s good to know we’re playing next week.”
