CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – The Austin Peay women’s basketball team came out firing on all cylinders especially from behind the arc Tuesday, Nov. 5 to start the 2019-20 campaign.

The Governors knocked down a program-record 18 threes in a 103-70 season-opening win over Kentucky Wesleyan in the Dunn Center.

Seven Governors combined to break the previous record that had stood since February 3, 2003, when the Govs drained 14 threes at home against Morehead State.

In the first quarter alone, APSU connected on six of seven shots from long distance.

Brianah Ferby came off the bench and contributed immediately. The sophomore guard recorded two made three-pointers and seven total points to start the contest, as Austin Peay led 29-19 after the opening quarter.

The Governors continued the scoring barrage into the second quarter and ended the first half shooting an amazing 12-of-14 from downtown.

At the break, four players were already in double-figures for Austin Peay. Freshman Ella Sawyer was the leading scorer after two quarters, as the Adelaide, Australia native had 12 points and a team-high four assists.

It was Tahanee Bennell’s time to shine in the second half for the Governor offense. The junior-college transfer from Turners Beach, Australia tallied eight third-quarter points on her way to being the co-leading scorer on the night with 21 points.

In the fourth quarter, freshman Shay-Lee Kirby got in on the action, hitting all three of her three-point tries in the final 10 minutes of the game to tie her teammate Bennell for the game-high in points with 21.

Bennell and Kirby combined for 42 points and 11 three-pointers in their first regular-season game.

Austin Peay (1-0) hosts Christian Brothers at 7 p.m. Friday, Nov 8 in the Dunn Center.
