CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Last week was another busy one for both of Austin Peay’s basketball teams. After the men and women both went 1-1 the week prior, the hope was for bounce-back performances for the Govs against a couple of Florida teams.
The men’s team entered the week with an 11-6 overall record and a 5-1 mark in ASUN play. The women’s team, meanwhile, entered with an 11-5 record and a 3-3 mark in ASUN play.
The men were set to play host to Florida Gulf Coast on Thursday night and Stetson on Saturday night. However, due to a forecasted major winter storm, both games were rescheduled. The FGCU game was rescheduled for Thursday at noon, while the Saturday game was rescheduled for Friday at noon.
Luckily, the women’s team wasn’t affected by the weather, as they were down in Florida taking on the same teams.
So, how did the teams do? Let’s recap the action from all four contests.
Men’s Basketball
Thursday, Jan. 22: APSU vs. FGCU
It was tough luck that the Govs had to move this game to noon on a workday. The Thursday night environment against a solid divisional opponent would undoubtedly have been raucous.
However, the thinner crowd didn’t deter the Govs. The team got off to a hot start and didn’t miss much in the first half. The Govs shot over 41% from the field and from three in the half and took a 41-29 lead into the half.
In the second, the Govs didn’t let up at all. The team shot over 51% from the field and didn’t allow FGCU to get all that close at any point. The Eagles only led once in the entire game, and that was when they got out to a 2-0 lead.
For the Govs, Matt Enright led the way with 19 points. The transfer guard made five three-pointers and scored in double figures for the first time since the conference opener. The Govs ended up securing an 83-62 win and improving to 12-6 overall and 6-1 in conference play while sweeping the season series with the Eagles.

Friday, Jan. 23: APSU vs. Stetson
The Govs had a quick turnaround as they had to tip off against Stetson less than 24 hours after Thursday’s game went final.
It did take a little while for the Govs to get going on Friday. The Hatters led by as many as seven in the first half, and the Govs couldn’t get any shots to fall. The Govs went just 1-13 from deep in the first half and 12-32 from the field. The Hatters went to the half with a 32-31 lead.
The Govs were fortunate to only be down one after such bad shooting luck. However, the team kicked into gear in the second half and started to look more like the team we’re accustomed to seeing.
The shooting was much better in the second half as the Govs went 16-27 from the field and 4-7 from deep. Big man Rashaud led all scorers with 21 points and also added nine rebounds and two steals.
Off the bench, guards Ja’Corey Robinson and Anton Brookshire combined for 28 points, three steals, nine rebounds, and five assists. Travis Torain, who had played sparingly before the Lipscomb game, contributed nine rebounds off the bench.
It was a full team effort, and the Peay walked away with a 73-65 victory. With the win, the Govs improved to 13-6 overall and 7-1 in ASUN play, while sweeping the season series with the Hatters as well. Another perfect homestand also moved the Govs to 9-0 at F&M Bank Arena this season.
Women’s Basketball
Thursday, Jan. 22: APSU vs. FGCU
After the men took care of business earlier in the day, the women tipped off against FGCU as well later that night. This game was more back-and-forth than the men’s game, with eight ties and nine lead changes.
Despite all of those lead changes, the Govs never trailed at the end of a quarter. The team was led by Kyra Perkins and Anovia Sheals, who combined for 33 points off the bench.
The difference in this game ultimately came down to bench scoring and dominance in the paint by the Govs. The Govs’ bench outscored the Eagles’ bench 45-24 and the Govs outscored the Eagles in the paint 40-22.
Ultimately, the Govs ended up escaping with a 74-66 win, securing their first-ever win against FGCU. The win also moved the Govs to 9-0 on the road this season and 4-3 in ASUN play.

Saturday, Jan. 24: APSU vs. Stetson
To wrap things up for the week, the women’s team went to DeLand, Florida, to take on the Stetson Hatters.
Once again, the women’s team got off to a hot start and led 21-17 after the first. The Govs were even hotter in the second, as they scored 28 points and took a 49-33 lead into the half. The Govs shot 7-11 from deep in the first half, which was one of their best shooting halves of the season.
The Hatters showed fight in the third quarter, though, and won the quarter 22-21. Entering the fourth, the Govs still had a commanding 15-point lead. However, the Hatters caught fire in the fourth and shot just under 70% from the field.
The fierce comeback wasn’t quite enough, though, as the Govs escaped with an 86-81 victory. The team received a massive offensive outburst from the bench again, as Anovia Sheals, Kyra Perkins, and JaNiah Newell combined for 49 points.
The women’s team had another perfect road trip, improving to an impressive 10-0 on the road this season.
