CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – (CLARKSVILLENOW) The Gateway Chamber Orchestra and Q108 are pleased to present, the family and children’s series, ‘City of Light’ with Gretchen Cordy.
The performance will take place on October 22 at 3 p.m. in the George and Sharon Mabry Concert Hall located in the Music Mass Communication building at Austin Peay State University.
This program gives families the opportunity to travel to Paris – The City of Light, with George Gershwin’s An American in Paris and Camille Saint-Saëns, Danse Macabre.
An American in Paris is a jazz-influenced orchestral piece that combines classical and jazz idioms to create a more modern composition. The piece will be accompanied by a video montage exploring the beautiful city of Paris.
Q108’s Gretchen Cordy (of Ryan and Gretchen in the Morning) will be narrating, Anna Celenza’s book, Saint-Saëns’s Danse Macabre, one of a series of books that introduces families to classical music. The book follows composer Saint-Saëns when he visits a hidden part of Paris and is inspired to write this fascinating piece of music. Visuals from Celenza’s book will be projected to accompany the narration and performance.
There will also be an instrumental “petting zoo” that gives students an opportunity to try out different orchestra instruments and a craft activity based on the concert at 2 p.m. These programs are “gateway activities” to provide a path to get families involved in classical music.
