Tucked next to the coffee shop by the movie theater off of Tiny Town and Trenton (Exit 1), Yolo’s is a bright spot with a fun vibe and some good old fashioned comfort food that is worth stopping in to try.
Greeted warmly and invited to sit where we would like, my dining companion and I decided to sit at the bar, where we were invited to have a cocktail or glass of wine with our lunch. We opted for tea.
The special of the day was catfish, either fried or blackened, with two sides and corn bread ($11.99). While that sounded interesting, the appeal of the pan-seared pork chops with an apple glaze ($11) won my friend’s vote, and I decided on the country fried steak ($10). Conveniently, other friends were dining in the restaurant, and a piping hot plate of fried catfish was delivered to their table while I was chatting with them. They graciously agreed to let me taste it. It was a bite of salty, crispy, clean tasting deliciousness. We all agreed that the claim of “best catfish in the area” may well be warranted.
Our food arrived, along with corn bread squares. My friend had ordered the chicken and dumplings and the candied yams with her meal, while I went with the mac and cheese and asparagus. We dug into the plates, piled high with a whole lot of comfort food. While we both enjoyed all of the offerings, the pork chops and mac and cheese shone as our definite favorites. The generous portions were such that we did need to request take out boxes.
Pleasantly full, when we heard there was banana pudding and peach cobbler ($3.50 each) on the menu, we felt it was imperative that we give those a try. My friend, a banana pudding connoisseur, rated the banana pudding a hit. It had a good balance of pudding, wafer, banana, and whipped cream. The peach cobbler was served warm, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a generous dash of cinnamon. The aroma was delightful, and the peaches were tender and juicy.
The combination of a friendly welcome, a bright and cheerful atmosphere, and hearty servings of comfort food? Yep, that makes Yolo’s a place worth checking out.
