CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Looking for a good sandwich and wanting to bypass the chains? Freedom Deli, located by Lowes off of Wilma Rudolph, gives lots of options, along with a great patriotic atmosphere in which to enjoy the sandwich of your choice.
I was pointed towards the Rueben as the most popular sandwich, but when I inquired as to how strong the rye bread was—caraway is not my favorite flavor—I was directed to have the Reuben on the pretzel bread. That was definitely a positive direction! Nicely toasted pretzel bread that was loaded with Boar’s Head corned beef, sauerkraut, cheese and Thousand Island dressing… It was a delicious Rueben with a great balance of flavors, with just the right amount of toasty chewiness from the pretzel bread. Yum!
If a Rueben isn’t your thing, there is a whole menu board full of options… You could try the Officer’s Club: a sub piled high with Boar’s Head turkey, ham and crispy bacon. They recommend trying that with sharp cheddar. If you are really hungry, it is suggested that you try the Heavy Lifter: a sandwich piled full of Boar’s Head roast beef, turkey, and ham.
You are given the option of adding a side and a drink for an extra charge… I decided on the deviled eggs— two halves filled with the egg yolks mixed with mayo and a little mustard. They were okay, but a little on the rubbery side. I will try the potato salad next time, or maybe just go with a bag of chips.
After finishing a huge sandwich, complete with a side and a drink, you may still want to make room to try a freshly made cannoli. The crisp pastry tube is stuffed full of a sweet and creamy Ricotta filling. This was delicious, but a treat I would choose to enjoy only once in a while, as it was extremely decadent.
My friend and I both enjoyed a sandwich, side and drink along with a cannoli each, and the bill (with tip) ended up right at $30.00. The service I had was great, with all of my questions cheerfully answered. For sandwich lovers looking to try something new, Freedom Deli offers a delicious, high quality option.
