CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Members of the Clarksville Kiwanis Club and Key Clubs from local high schools offered their services at the Dunbar Cave State Natural Area on Saturday, September 28. Over 50 volunteers took care of painting, washing windows, clean up and other needed chores in the cave area and at the Dunbar Cave Visitor’s Center.

Dunbar Cave has been a state park since 1973 and features a visitor’s center with a small natural history museum, picnic pavilions, playgrounds, fishing and over three miles of hiking trails. Plans are for the area near the cave to be available in the near future for rent to hold weddings, parties and other events.

With the success of the recent clean up, officials at Dunbar Cave are looking for other groups, clubs, organizations and military units to also hold a volunteer day at the park.

The Friends of Dunbar Cave and the Starcatcher Initiative are presenting “Animal Tales: The Tale of Hansel and Gretel” for a night tour. Barty the Bat, Roxy Raccoon, Ophelia the Owl and Park Ranger Skip will share tales of Dunbar Cave history and the adventures of Hansel and Gretel October 18 and 19.

Tickets are $5.00 per person and must be purchased in advance at the park’s visitor center between 8:00 and 11:00 a.m. 3:00-3:30 p.m. and 5:00-6:00 p.m. Monday –Wednesday or 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturdays. Tickets must be purchased by 3:30 p.m. Thursday, October 17. The tour is family friendly and not intended to be scary and all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Dunbar Cave is located at 401 Old Dunbar Cave Road in Clarksville. Hours of operation are 8:00 a.m. until sunset. The visitor’s Center is open from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For more information about Dunbar Cave facilities, events and activities phone 931-648-5526 or visit www.tnstateparks.com.
