Douglas Glenn Sims, 63, of Clarksville, TN, went to be with the Lord peacefully at his home surrounded by his family and friends on Friday, September 20, 2013. He was born March 28, 1950 in Pittsboro, NC to the late Jesse Glenn Sims and Georgia Burgess Sims. He was also preceded in death by one brother, Jesse Sims and two sisters, Rachel Mickle and Peggie McKearns.
Funeral service will be held Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Neal-Tarpley-Parchman Chapel with Dr. Jeff Burris officiating. Burial will be in Kentucky Veterans Cemetery-West in Hopkinsville, KY with full military honors. Visitation will be held Monday, September 23, 2013 from 2-7 p.m. and Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 9 a.m. until the hour of service at the funeral home.
Doug was a U.S. Army Veteran, having served for over 21 years. He was a Retired Physician’s Assistant with the Veterans Administration. He was a member of St. Bethlehem First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School and was an Awana Leader. He was a member of the gospel trio called New Direction. He was a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants.
He is survived by his wife, Cathy Perry Sims of Clarksville, TN; two sons, Eric Sims (Michelle) of Woodlawn, TN and Brandon Sims (Anya) of Hendersonville, TN; step-daughter, Kristin Averitte (Brandon) of Hendersonville, TN; three brothers, Sam Sims of Winston Salem, NC, Bob Sims (Susan) of North Port, FL, and Roger Sims (Diane) of Wake Forest, NC; two sisters, Lee Kelly of Lexington, NC and Mary Wilcox of Kearnsville, NC; Doug was known as Poppie to his five grandchildren, Chloe, Hailey, Allison, London, and Berkeley.
Pallbearers will be Marc Daniels, Charles Pigg, Ronnie Perry, Glen Nanney, Ronnie Averitte, and David Buchanan. Honorary pallbearers will be Horace Perry, Roy Franklin, Joe King, and Jimmie Hite.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Oakwood Free Will Baptist Church Youth Fund, c/o Eric Sims (Youth Pastor), 2551 Church Lane, Woodlawn, TN 37191.
