What is the difference between CBD and Marijuana?
Tennessee’s thriving hemp industry has created an emerging market for businesses and farmers looking for a new cash crop.
The most versatile area of the hemp industry is currently the CBD market. While often confused for THC, the psychoactive part of marijuana that causes a high, CBD has far different effects.
CBD v. MARIJUANA
Although THC and CBD are both found in plants of the Cannabis family, there is a difference between CBD and THC:
Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the principal psychoactive constituent of marijuana, i.e., the part that makes people feel high. It is a cannabinoid.
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid of cannabis. Because it is not psychoactive, it doesn’t produce the high associated with THC. CBD can be made from marijuana or hemp, which are both part of the Cannabis family.
One of the initial distinctions people should make is the difference between marijuana and hemp. While both are from the cannabis family, there is the marijuana variety and the hemp variety of plants.
Simply put, hemp plants with 0.3 percent or less of THC are used to produce CBD. Cannabis plants with more than 0.3 percent THC are used to produce marijuana.
Although they are from the same family, researchers describe them as being distant cousins. The anatomy of the plant may be the first indicator.
Hemp is often described as growing taller and skinner. You cannot tell just by looking at a plant whether it is a marijuana or hemp variety. However their difference, legally, is clear. Recreational and medical marijuana are illegal. Hemp and CBD are legal.
