ORLANDO, Fla. – (CLARKASVILLENOW) Austin Peay State University women’s basketball team came one point short of completing a second-half comeback against St. Bonaventure, Saturday, falling 58-57 in the opening game of the UCF Thanksgiving Classic in the CFE Arena. For the Governors (4-2), the loss snaps its four-game winning streak.
In the opening period, the Govs got behind the eight ball early, with St. Bonaventure (2-3) outscoring APSU 22-7. The Bonnies shot 62.5 percent from the field compared to APSU’s 23 percent clip. However, Austin Peay answered with a strong second frame, upping the aggression to force five steals and limit SBU’s chances.
Austin Peay outmatched St. Bonaventure 34-28 in the second half, but the early hole was too much to overcome. Junior forward Sydney Gooch and junior guard Bri Williams each had 11 points to lead the Govs,
combining for six three-pointers on the afternoon. Freshman guard Shelbe Piggie scored a career-best 11 points off the bench, including a three at the final buzzer.
The Govs conclude their stay in Orlando, playing the host Knights in the third game of the UCF Thanksgiving Classic, Sunday. Tip-off will be at 2:30 p.m., ET.
