Cleveland Carr Turner, 86, passed away at his home in Clarksville, Tennessee on August 24, 2024, after an extended illness.

Born on January 31, 1938, in Bumpus Mills, Tennessee to Edgar Turner and Evelyn Smith Turner, Cleveland, affectionately known as Cleve, was a beloved figure in his community. He was best known as husband of 64 years to Joyce, “Daddy” to three children, “Big Daddy” to 8 grandchildren and one great-grandchild, and “Spookie” to family and friends close enough to earn use of the nickname. The origin of “Spookie” remains a mystery, with those in the know keeping the secret close to their hearts.

Cleve graduated from Austin Peay State University before earning his J.D. and becoming a fixture in Clarksville’s courtrooms. His quick wit, sharp legal mind, and unflappable demeanor were well-respected in the legal community.

An avid traveler, Cleve’s international adventures shaped his worldview and nurtured his love of history. However, he also left his mark on the world in more tangible ways. A notoriously terrible driver, there was no traffic law too official for him to disregard, nor structure too substantial for him to sideswipe with a camper or car.

Family was paramount in Cleve’s life. His home of over 50 years was the site of many raucous gatherings, with July 4th celebrations holding a special place in his heart. As dusk approached on Independence Day, Cleve would embark on his annual fireworks-buying mission, visiting multiple stands to secure the largest haul for the best price. He’d return home triumphant, armed with a weapons-grade amount of firepower and tales of his legendary haggling skills.

Cleve’s legacy of love, laughter, and larger-than-life personality will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.

Cleveland is survived by his wife of 64 years, Joyce Burkhart Turner; his children, Lori Turner, Stacy Turner, and Christopher Turner (Rachel); eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his brother, Anthony; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Evelyn; his sister, Clara; and brothers, B.J. and Jimmy.

The family will receive friends on Friday, August 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. at Neal-Tarpley Parchman Funeral Home and again on Saturday, August 31 from noon until the hour of service at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Grant Sonneby, William Thompson, Richard Thompson, Matthew Sonneby, Caleb Turner, and Michael Olson.

Arrangements are in the care of Neal Tarpley Parchman Funeral Home.
