CLARKSVILLE, TN – Local rotary clubs have partnered with Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden to light up the RJ Corman Bridge in purple to promote polio awareness as well as to honor Clarksville’s own Wilma Rudolph, who overcame polio and became the first woman to win three gold medals in the 1960 Olympics.
Rotary launched PolioPlus in 1985 and was a founding member of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative in 1988. Through decades of commitment and work by Rotary and our partners, more than 2.5 billion children have received the oral polio vaccine. There are currently 9 active cases of Polio. Rotary is committed to the eradication of this paralyzing disease.
October 24th and 25th recognizes World Polio Day and Purple Pinky Day, respectively. Rotary has partnered with Dunkin Donuts to raise money for the eradication of Polio. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match the funds raised by the purchase of Purple Pinkie Donuts.
