CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The West Creek Coyotes traveled to William Workman Gymnasium for the season opener against the Clarksville Wildcats. While the Coyotes battled, Clarksville held them to single digit points in all four quarters, and the Wildcats pulled out 65-15 win, starting the season 1-0.
Early on, both teams struggled offensively, but Clarksville was able to get buckets on the fast break.
Clarksville head coach Brian Rush was proud to see their defensive identity show up in their first game of the season. “Thirty-four years of coaching and every year defense is what we emphasize,” said Rush. “In practice we have a hard time scoring, and I’m grateful that’s due to our defense being good. It showed up in a big way tonight.”
The Coyotes were not without positives, as they were able to possess the ball in the second half and make a few timely shots.
West Creek head coach Mikaela Coleman is excited to see her team grow.
“We just have to do the little things right,” said Coleman. “We’re getting the concepts down, so we can work on that. We were in the right spot, but we’re a young team. Take this, apply corrections, don’t let it sit, and move on.”
The Wildcats offense outscored the Coyotes by 27 in the 3rd quarter to pull away.
For Rush, it’s all about his team getting better throughout the season. “We’re just trying to get better,” said Rush. “No one in the state is ready for the playoffs, so we just want to grow. There’s going to be ups and downs along the way, but we just have to grow as a group each day.”
