CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSILLE NOW) – The Cougar boys’ and girls’ tennis teams battled Goodpasture Christian School during this past week of competition. The Lady Cougars won big in their third regular season district tennis match, but the boys’ team fell, in a well-versed fight.

In singles action, the Lady Cougars were led at the one position by freshman Anna Marie Adams with an 8-1 victory over Goodpasture’s (GCS) Gabi Edwards.

Adams’ serve and tenacious play awarded her the win. GCS’ Karson Winders tested Bentley Clift early in the match, however, she was out gunned by Clift’s ballistic backhand and her improving serve.

Amarah Hill cruised to victory with consistency at the number 3 position with an 8-2 to defeat Samantha Johnson. Kennedy German tussled early remaining even at 3-3, then broke loose out gunning GCS’ Carson Davis winning 5 consecutive games to clinch the win with a score of 8-3.

At the 5 singles spot Abby Powers, who is constantly improving at every contest, battled in a back-and-forth nail biter of a match ultimately succumbing to an 8-9 (6-8) loss in the tiebreaker. In exhibition play, Abby Scoville placed it all on the line going in big at 5-5, to rally for a win at 8-5.

“It was nice to have the ladies in full form today against one of our district rivals,” said Clarksville Academy tennis coach Ken Adams.

Doubles action

The Lady Cougars didn’t spare any mercy in doubles action as Adams and Clift paired again as the number one doubles team to knock down GCS’ Edwards and Winders with a score of 8-2.

Adams and Clift brought a combo of serves and volleys that have left their opponents stunned so far this season. Adams sealed the win with an ace on match point. German and Hill brought huge returns and volleys to cruise to a 8-2 W over Johnson/Davis (GCS).

Hill and Kennedy have been a surprising pair so far this season. They seem to match energy and bring the fire when the marshmallows need toasting.

Boys’ tennis results

At the number one position, Sophomore Isaiah Cawood had many opportunities, however fell short 2-8 to GCS’ Max Head. Cawood is getting stronger and stronger each match, and he is really starting to take action in tactical situations.

Junior Ethan Hester dropped 0-8 to GCS’ Lucias Smiley. Ethan is starting to gain more and more court awareness with each match, this will make his speed more of an asset to his game.

Sophomore Braxton Baggett fell 2-8 to GCS’ Grady Goodman. Baggett has been a great addition to the team this year. Being a beginner and first timer at this sport, his coaches are very proud of his consistent brave attitude as he battles for the Cougar Men.

“Our boys are improving a little each time, that is all our staff can ask, keep grinding and showing up,” said Adams.

The Cougar Men were represented in doubles by Cawood /Hester vs. Head/Smiley of GCS. GCS took the doubles win 2-8.

The Cougars will face Columbia Academy at Swan Lake Sports Complex in Clarksville on Monday, April 3rd as their season progresses.
