CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (ESPN CLARKSVILLE) – The Clarksville Academy Cougars basketball team made the journey into unchartered territory this season when the school decided to make the jump from the public sector to Division II and compete against other private schools from across the state. So far, so good.
The Cougars have posted an overall 22-7 record and have found themselves in the district championship game tonight at 8 p.m. against Goodpasture Christian School.
Last night, Clarksville Academy defeated Donelson Christian Academy 51-26 and punched their ticket to tonight’s championship game. The Cougars were led by sophomore Daniel Loos, who finished the night with 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Freshman Brandon Huntley added 11 points and 5 rebounds to help secure the win for Clarksville Academy.
Clarksville Academy head coach Matt Wallace credits the big win to a couple of different things.
“We played well defensively. We were able to keep them from getting open looks from the perimeter, and did a pretty good job of keeping them out of the paint. They hurt us a couple of possessions on their break, but for the most part, we were able to contain their scorers,” Wallace said.
The Cougars will need to play their best basketball when they face Goodpasture tonight in the championship game.
“Goodpasture, in my opinion, is the best team in Division II, in the state. They can go 6’4″ or bigger at every position, and Tripp Machern is a real player. He is big, strong, can put it on the floor, and can shoot over you. They play primarily zone, and try to make you beat them from the outside, but with their length, they always have a hand in your face,” Wallace said.
“We have to be patient on offense and take great shots. We have to be relentless on defense, and keep them off the boards. If we allow them to get 2nd and 3rd shot opportunities, it will be a long night for us. But I think this is a real opportunity for our young team. A great experience. Playing one of the best teams in the state, in our division, on their home floor for the district championship. It doesn’t get any better than that!”
Tip off tonight will be at 8 p.m. at Goodpasture Christian School, 619 W Due West Ave, Madison, TN 37115.
