CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – The Clarksville Academy Cougars baseball team did something they haven’t done in six years. With a 10-0 win over Nashville Christian on Tuesday evening, the Cougars (20-7 9-1) captured the District 10A title.
Coach Jake Peterson credits the Cougars season to a few factors.
“Our team really grew in the off season. They all had an extra focus on getting themselves prepped and ready for the spring. They really took care of their arms and overall body health,” Peterson said. “Our pitching has really stepped up, our main starters have carried a heavy workload and oftentimes have been able to go the distance in a 7 inning game. Their arms were in shape and able to finish off games. Pitching has really been the key to our success.”
He also credits the Cougars bat consistency throughout the season.
“Our offense has been solid and has found ways to score runs. We have had production from 1-9 in the lineup. Our group of guys have figured out that singles and doubles are very effective to scoring runs,” Peterson said. “We don’t have to get big with our swings, just stay within ourselves and keep a line drive approach.”
When asked about post season, the expectations are simple.
“One game at a time! Stay aggressive, stay positive!” he said. “I believe everyone’s first common goal is to win a district championship. You want to be competitive within your district and give yourself a chance to make a run at regions, sectional and state. We have had a very competitive district over the last few years. This is our first regular season district championship since 2010.”
“This group of seniors have been together since middle school,” Peterson continued. “They want to represent Clarksville Academy and District 10 at the furthest point possible! It means a lot to our CA community to win championships. The students, faculty and staff are all proud to see their student-athletes succeed and see positive results for what they put into something they love. There is nothing better than post season competition. Our players are ready for the challenge and excited to be the best they can be.”
Clarksville Academy travels to Charlotte Friday to take on Creekwood at 6:30 p.m. in a non-conference game.
