CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Charles W. Smith, whose race for city judge is uncontested, says he’s humbled to serve Clarksville for another four years.
“I consider the judgeship a privilege, an honor, and a responsibility,” says Smith, who has served as city judge since 2001. “The judicial team and I do our best to respectfully apply the law, and we take great pride in contributing to the positive quality of life in Clarksville.”
The judicial “team” includes Chief City Court Clerk Ernie Griffith, Deputy City Court Clerk Brenda Tyree, Court Officer Marvin Carnagey, Security Officer Tim Wilm, Chief Security Officer William Welty, Police Chief David Crockarell and a host of City Court clerks and police officers.
Smith holds doctoral degrees in both law and education, and said he believes that effective adjudication emphasizes education. “We all make mistakes from time to time,” he said. “But if citizens leave City Court feeling respected and better informed than when they came in, they’re far less likely to commit the same infraction.”
The longtime Clarksville resident thanked those who have supported him in previous elections and said he looks forward to serving another term.
Smith, who primarily hears traffic offences, offers timely advice to Clarksville drivers: “Follow the law and stay safe out there,” he said with a smile. “I enjoy meeting fellow Clarksvillians – but I’d rather not do so in City Court.”
