CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Democratic U.S. Senate candidate and former TN Governor Phil Bredesen is visiting Clarksville Tuesday, Oct. 23.

Bredesen will be at Sango Pharmacy to discuss his plan to lower prescription drug prices.

Last week, the Associated Press reported that Bredesen is backing a plan for the federal government to negotiate drug prices with pharmaceutical companies. On Oct. 16 he told a room of business leaders in Nashville that he thinks President Donald Trump should negotiate terms with drug companies that would ensure they are charging the U.S. the same prices as other countries.

He cited drug prices in the U.S. that far exceed ones in other industrialized counties.

Bredesen said the idea falls in line with Trump’s “America First” mantra because negotiations would be needed with some major international drug companies.

Bredesen’s campaign says the idea would require repealing a law that prevents the federal government from negotiating drug prices for Medicare Part D. He adds he’s willing to meet with Trump to discuss the idea.

The Montgomery County Democratic Party says Bredesen will also visit the Young College Democrats at Austin Peay State University for the Get Out to Vote Campaign from 3-4 p.m.

Bredesen is campaigning against Republican Marsha Blackburn for the Senate seat to be vacated by Sen. Bob Corker. The two have been firing back and forth at each other in a series of debates and political TV ads. You can read more about the race here.
