CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Austin Peay State University baseball center fielder Garrett Spain was picked by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 15th round of the 2021 Major League Baseball Draft on Tuesday.

Spain becomes the 44th player in program history to be taken in the MLB draft and just the ninth Governor player to be selected in the 15th round or earlier.

The redshirt sophomore holds a .324 career batting average, .520 slugging percentage and .407 on-base percentage through two seasons at Austin Peay.

In 2020, Spain started all 17 games for the Govs before hitting .330 with a team-high nine home runs, 43 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 2021.

The former Clarksville High baseball standout earned First Team All-OVC honors for his efforts, following up an exceptional 2019 campaign in which he was named OVC Freshman of the Year.

Spain still has two years left of collegiate eligibility and could ultimately decide to return to school.
