CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Heading into the final week of the 2023-24 regular season, the Austin Peay State University baseball team is sitting in sole possession of first place in A-SUN conference standings, according to the league’s official website.
With a conference record of 18-9, the Govs have a one-game lead over teams such as Stetson University, Florida Gulf Coast and Jacksonville University, who all have a record of 17-10. Meanwhile, Kennesaw State remains two games back with a record of 16-10, and Lipscomb remains three games back with a record of 15-12.
Best offense in nation
Throughout the majority of the season, Austin Peay has relied on their offensive capabilities while ranking among the top teams in the nation in several statistical categories. However, going into the final week, the Govs officially have the best offense in all of Division-I baseball.
Not only are the Govs consistently getting on base, but they are also showcasing their power game after game. Austin Peay ranks first in the nation in batting average, total hits, runs, doubles, home runs, on-base percentage and slugging percentage. In addition, they have the No. 1 scoring offense with an average of 11.1 runs scored per game, according to the NCAA.
Total | NCAA Rank | |
---|---|---|
Batting Average | .359 | 1st |
Total Hits | 671 | 1st |
Doubles | 140 | 1st |
Home Runs | 140 | 1st |
On-base % | .456 | 1st |
Slugging % | .670 | 1st |
Runs | 568 | 1st |
Scoring | 11.1 | 1st |
If the season were to end today, the Govs’ batting average this season would be the highest since Utah Valley batted .372 during the 2009-10 season. Similarly, if the season were to end today, Austin Peay’s slugging percentage of .670 would be the highest in over 20 years, according to NCAA’s archived statistics, which only goes back to 2001-02.
The all-time record for slugging percentage in a season was set at .689 by BYU during the 1988 season. With four games left in the 2023-24 regular season, Austin Peay has a chance to cement their names in the history books if they are able to push their slugging percentage over .689.
Each of the Govs’ final four regular season games will be played at home:
- Tuesday, May 14, vs. University of Evansville.
- Thursday, May 16, vs. North Alabama.
- Friday, May 17, vs. North Alabama.
- Saturday, May 18, vs. North Alabama.
Following the conclusion of Austin Peay’s regular season, they’ll make their way to DeLand, Florida for the A-SUN tournament.
