CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Despite falling in the ASUN Conference Tournament Championship Game, the Austin Peay women’s basketball team’s season isn’t over just yet. On Sunday night, the Govs were announced as one of 48 teams selected to the 2026 Women’s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT).
This is the first-ever appearance in the WNIT for the Govs and their first postseason tournament appearance since 2022 when they appeared in the Women’s Basketball Invitational.
It was revealed on Monday that the Govs will host their first-round matchup against the University of Texas Rio Grand Valley on Thursday, March 19, at F&M Bank Arena in Clarksville. With a win over the Vaqueros, the Govs would advance to face Illinois State.

The Govs are one of three ASUN teams set to participate in the WNIT, joining Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
Austin Peay finished with a 19-13 overall record and an 8-10 mark in ASUN play. However, the Govs got hot during the conference tournament, winning three games and advancing all the way to the championship game. Unfortunately, the Govs dropped the final to Jacksonville in overtime, meaning Jacksonville received the ASUN’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
With the Govs being selected for the WNIT though, the season goes on. This will be the first-ever meeting between the Govs and Vaqueros, and the match will tip off on Thursday night at 6 p.m.
