CLARKSVILLE, Tenn (CLARKSVILLENOW) – A local American Legion post received national acclaim in an award ceremony on July 18.

Douglas M. Lyons, Dover Post 72 received the Prestigious National Commanders Post Excellence Award at the Eighth District Commanders Tour in Scotts Hill, Tenn. Out of more than 12,000 posts, only 131 were selected for recognition. Post 72 is one of three to receive the award in Tennessee this year.

Members of Post 72 thanked their affiliate groups as well as the Stewart County community for helping them to win the award and to be the best they can be.

Post 72 was founded in Steward County in 1930 with 42 members. Douglas M Lyons, the man for whom Post 72 is named, was a WWI veteran who was killed in combat action in Verdun, France on October 12, 1918.

The American Foreign Legion is a wartime veterans’ organization dedicated to youth mentorship and the advocacy of patriotism though community service. They are well known for their American Legion Baseball program and Operation Comfort Warriors, which provides comfort items to recovering injured service members and their families.
