Fort Campbell, KY. – It was another historic day for the 4th Brigade Combat Team (BCT) “Currahee” 506th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) with an Inactivation and Relinquishment of Command Ceremony held Friday, April 25 at Fort Campbell.

Soldiers with the brigade spread out across the Division Parade Field for the ceremony as the latest chapter of the Currahees legacy and their rendezvous with destiny drew to a close. It was emotional and bittersweet time for Soldiers currently serving in the brigade as well as the many veterans attending the ceremony.

The 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment was established in July of 1942 and served in WWII earning two Presidential Unit Citations. The Curahees also served in Vietnam from 1967- 1971 receiving two more Presidential Unit Citations. The 506th was inactivated in 1984 and reactivated in 2005 at Fort Campbell as the 4th BCT.

Since 2005, one deployment to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom was followed by three deployments to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. The last deployment to Afghanistan covered nine-months in 2013.

Following the inactivation ceremony the now former Commander of the 4th Brigade, Colonel Val C. Keaveny Jr. who is taking over his new assignment as Chief of Staff of the 101st shared his feelings about how their may be more to celebrate as far as the future of the 506th Infantry Regiment.

“The Currahee’s have fought for nine-and-a-half years in combat with the 101st. The only battle we missed was Desert Storm. I know that when our nation has a significant fight on its hands again, the Currahees will assemble and fight to the same high standards we’ve done every time until today,” said Keaveny.
