CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Clarksville Police have issued a warning about ongoing scams involving counterfeit money.
Police say they have made arrests but it’s still happening and usually involves the purchase of Xbox or PlayStations on social media sites like Craigslist or Snapchat.
According to a CPD press release suspects contact sellers and set up a meeting in a parking lot and exchange counterfeit bills for goods.
Another common form of passing counterfeit funds is at fast food businesses and gas stations where the suspects pay with counterfeit cash while the cashier is busy or distracted.
Detective Dennis Honholt advises sellers only accept money orders or check the cash carefully before handing over the property and always request to see identification.
If the buyer seems suspicious, Honholt suggests getting a license plate number and take a photo if possible. Fast food businesses and gas stations should ensure that the clerks are aware of the possibility of counterfeit funds and to be extra attentive to this type of criminal activity.
Anyone with information related to these incidents is asked to call Honholt at 931-648-0565, ext. 5260, or the CrimeStoppers TIPS Hotline at 931-645-TIPS (8477).
