CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Director of the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System, Dr. B.J. Worthington received a unanimous vote Tuesday, August 13 to extend his contract for three more years. Worthington, who had been chief academic officer, took over as director of schools in 2012 after former director Mike Harris resigned.

Worthington was praised by school board members at their Tuesday meeting. In return, Worthington commented on the quality and hard work of his staff as well as the great teachers and students in the school system. Worthington also told the board that as the new school year begins enrollment is at 30,909 students.

Also Tuesday the school board approved a lease agreement with the Clarksville Police Department for property on the campus of Minglewood Elementary School on Cunningham Lane to build a North Precinct for the Police Department. The Police Department currently operates their North Precinct on Millwood Drive.

Several of the school system’s Point of Pride Awards were handed out at Tuesday’s meeting. Whitney Joyner, a teacher at Northeast Middle School was named as one of two Patricia Behring teachers of the year from Tennessee.

Northeast High School students Lily Joiner, Katelyn Mitchell and Keya Patel were awarded a prize for Best Entry on a World War II topic for their Senior Group Performance. The award is sponsored by the National World War II Museum.

Emily reeve, a student at West Creek High School placed second in the nation at the HOSA (Future Health Professionals competition. Also honored was Preston Albertia who has been elected Civitan’s Valley District Junior Governor.

Turning to sports teams, the Clarksville High School Girls Softball Team was recognized for being one of the final four teams competing in the state tournament and the CHS Varsity Skeet Team took home the state championship.
