CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Clarksville Wildcats flag football team traveled across the river to Montgomery Central High School for a win-or-go-home semifinal matchup with the Indians on Monday. A defensive-heavy game in the first half quickly turned high-paced, and Central’s three touchdowns in the final 20 minutes powered them to a 22-0 win, advancing them to the championship and ending the Wildcats’ season.
Early on, both teams had chances at scores, but neither could find the endzone. Most of the credit falls to defense from both teams, where Central’s Katarina Vidovic and Clarksville’s McKenna Carbin both notched interceptions. The teams headed into the halftime break knotted at 0.
“We played a really good team that’s very well coached,” said Central head coach Bill Youngquist. “That was a good team effort on the defensive side of the ball, we really performed in short field situations, hustled to the ball, and pulled flags when we got the opportunity.”
Coming out of the halftime break, Central’s passing game caught fire, and were able to complete several short passes to march down the field, led by quarterback Audrey Levendusky. The Indians scored three touchdowns in the second half, two from Jocelyn Kolozsy and one from Ashley Steele, to pull away and earn the win, advancing to their third straight championship game.
“It was a game of two halves,” said Wildcats head coach Taylor Stanley. “We got down in the red zone and couldn’t capitalize. It snowballed towards the end, but really proud of the girls; they did everything we asked and executed the game plan. I can’t say enough good things about this year’s senior class.”
For Central, they now have a rematch for a third straight year with the West Creek Coyotes. The two teams have split the first two championship games in county history, but now, the birth of the first-ever TSSAA state tournament is on the line.
“Most of the time it comes down to three things,” said Youngquist. “We want to throw the ball, catch it, and pull flags. We’re excited for another matchup with them.”
