CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Montgomery County Budget Committee is looking to reallocate $900,000 worth of funding to include Fredonia Park Phase 2 construction in the fiscal year 2025 budget.

The Budget Committee’s proposal comes weeks after the County Commission cut $9.2 million from the next fiscal year budget, which included cutting $650,000 worth of funding for Fredonia Phase 2. According to county spokesperson Michelle Newell, the $900,000 would be reallocated from a $2.1 million land acquisition that is being postponed until a later date.

Project overview

The Fredonia project is comprised of three phases. The first phase was completed in May 2020, which fully renovated the old schoolhouse that was located off Highway 12 and turned it into the Fredonia Community Center that it is today.

The site is just off Highway 12 in southeast Montgomery County at 4650 Old Ashland City Road South.

Meanwhile, Phase 2 of the project was designed by the Montgomery County Engineering Office and is master planned to construct:

  • A new parking lot with ADA-compliant spaces.
  • Pavement for an existing gravel parking lot built back in 2020.
  • A quarter mile ADA-compliant walking trail around the park.

The master plan for this phase also includes the construction of a full-size basketball court and an open-air pavilion. The grading, drainage, utility adjustments and site stabilization for multiple other components will also be included in Phase 2, according to Newell.

Finally, Phase 3 includes the addition of six pickleball courts when the project receives additional funding at a later date. Phase 3 also includes the development of a playground area and greenspace, which will be graded level. Newell said as phase 2 is completed, the Montgomery County Parks Office will seek grants that could help fund and construct the playground.

“After this project failed to receive funding in the July formal commission meeting, Mayor (Wes) Golden moved to request approval for this capital funding adjustment in order to get this shovel-ready project moving forward,” Newell told Clarksville Now.

The proposal to include Fredonia Park Phase 2 construction in the fiscal year 2025 budget will be heard next week when the County Commission meets on Monday, Aug. 5.
