When Gary Sylak started in real estate 30 years ago, there was no internet. There were no cell phones. There were fewer than 10,000 soldiers at Fort Campbell.

Since then, everything has changed – but not Sylak’s commitment to helping his clients with their real estate decisions, and teaching them something along the way.

“When you call me up, you get me – you don’t get some other agent,” Sylak said.

30 years of finding homes in Clarksville

Sylak retired from the Army in 1993 after 23 years in the Army. He’d been in Clarksville since 1985, so he already knew the community well when he got started.

Today, people can go directly to online sources and buy a house sight unseen without speaking to anyone. They can also make some huge mistakes.

“Some people think they can Google it and get all the answers,” he said. But working with someone who knows the community can avoid making a bad decision. With almost 40 years of experience in the community, 30 of those in real estate, Sylak can help people moving here for the first time choose a location that’s right for them.

“The first thing I like to do is give a tour of the community. I like to be a tour guide when I first meet you, and drive around and show you the area,” he said. “Different people want different things in a neighborhood. I don’t want to just make a sale – I want you to be happy with what you buy.”

Sylak also likes his clients to learn a lot along the way. “I believe in teaching people how to buy a house.”

Surging local real estate market

It’s easy to get lost and overwhelmed when the real estate market is as hot as it is in Clarksville.

“Lots of people are moving here,” Sylak said. “It used to be mostly Fort Campbell, but now it’s a mixed bag.” He said people are moving here because of the lack of a state income tax, the comparative low cost of living and housing, and the popularity of Nashville less than an hour away.

“I can help you negotiate all of those changes, including setting up searches to get the house you want.”

All of those new buyers have also brought a lot of new real estate agents, but few have Sylak’s experience.

“I’m a one-man operation – always have been,” he said. “But I’m available seven days a week, and I like to give my clients personalized attention.”
