CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. – Several local churches are teaming up to host the third annual I Scream for FUEL Ice Cream Freeze-Off Saturday, Aug. 24 from 4-6 p.m. at Salem United Methodist Church at 2269 Seven Mile Ferry Road.
FUEL is a Montgomery County-based organization that provides meals for children in need. Area churches gather donations to assemble healthy food FUEL bags, which are given to children by their teachers. Many children rely on school breakfast and lunch, and these meals help to supplement them over the weekend.
Carol Ussery, who works closely with FUEL, said by the time school begins in the fall, most of the funds for the program have been depleted. The Freeze-Off is held to raise funds for this critical time period. “We want this to keep growing,” she said.
The United Methodist Churches of Mt. Zion, Antioch, Marion and Salem along with the Lone Oak and Memorial Baptist churches and the Christ Fellowship Methodist Church in Clarksville will host the Freeze-Off. Salem United Methodist is looking for creative cooks to submit their favorite ice cream concoctions for the contest.
Contestants will face off to find out who can make the most delicious ice cream treat. Judges include: Richard Stevens, publisher of The Leaf Chronicle, Beverly Bridges, owner of the Choppin Block, Chef Wendell Hensley, Melinda Shepard, Executive Director of the Clarksville Area Chamber of Commerce, Niesha Wolfe, restaurateur and small business owner, and Mark Weakley, owner Queen City Restaurant equipment. Snowbird from WSMV will also make an appearance.
Ussery hopes to see a large amount of entries. “Anybody can do it if they follow directions,” she said.
To enter the contest, contact Salem United Methodist Church at 645-2544 or Carol Ussery at 647-6846. Deadline for entry is Wednesday, August 21.
The public is invited to attend the Freeze-Off and sample the ice cream. Donations for FUEL can be made at the door.
