CLARKSVILLE, TN – Nonprofit, online university WGU Tennessee recently surprised John Saslofsky with a $10,000 Tenn-K Scholarship that will help cover most of his tuition as he pursues his Master of Science degree in Teaching, Curriculum and Instruction.

Saslofsky learned that he had been awarded the Tenn-K Scholarship during a surprise visit from WGU Tennessee Chancellor Kimberly K. Estep at Ringgold Elementary School in Clarksville, Tenn.

“Over the past 10 years, WGU Tennessee has been thrilled to surprise students like John with a life-changing scholarship to pursue their educational dreams,” Estep said. “John has dedicated 17 years of his life to teaching the next generation, and we are honored to award him a Tenn-K Scholarship as he works toward his goal of mentoring and coaching new teachers in the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System.”

As a fourth-grade teacher and multi-classroom leader, Saslofsky spends time working with new teachers and student teachers in the district. With hopes of staying on top of the ever-changing trends of education, he decided to take the leap and pursue a degree program focused on curriculum and instruction.

“Thanks to WGU’s flexible degree programs, I’m able to complete my coursework on my own schedule without having to sacrifice time with my students and work commitments,” Saslofsky said. “Earning my master’s degree from WGU, with the financial assistance from the Tenn-K Scholarship, is an amazing turning point as I work toward an administrative-focused role in my school district. I am so grateful for this opportunity to grow in my career path and strengthen my skills for my students and peers.”

The Tenn-K Scholarship – which covers roughly two-thirds of WGU Tennessee’s already low-tuition of around $4,000 per six-month term for most programs – is awarded based on students’ academic records, readiness for online study, and demonstrated financial need. WGU offers more than 80 online undergraduate and graduate programs in K–12 education, business, health, and information technology.
