CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – Drew Marr isn’t normally one to watch game shows or even nighttime TV. But by some chance, he was watching Beat Shazam one night. Ten minutes in, he decided he had to be on the show.
“I made a little 15-second casting video,” Drew told Clarksville Now. “The producer reached out probably a month and a half, two months later, and said, ‘Hey, we’re not casting for Beat Shazam, but I want you to be on this show called Supermarket Sweep.'”
In Supermarket Sweep, hosted by comedian Leslie Jones, contestants are required to answer questions, with each right answer giving them more time to stuff groceries in their cart. The person with the most dollar value in their cart by the end wins the game and $100,000.
Drew’s natural choice was his older brother, Casey, who lives in Knoxville.
“There was a time when Drew’s wife said that the only thing we ever talk about are old memories, and that really stuck with me,” Casey said. “As we get older, we’ve been actively trying to make new memories, and this was an opportunity to do something unique.”
Casey soon found himself standing in a virtual mock show with Drew.
“I didn’t think he was being serious or that it was actually going to come to fruition. It didn’t dawn on me until he was standing in my living room, and we were on Webex with one of their casting producers,” Casey said.
Drew said it’s an experience he and his brother will not soon forget.
“(The experience) makes you look at game shows differently; not everything is consecutive in the way it plays out on TV,” Drew said.
The high-energy environment left Drew with some advice for future game show hopefuls.
“You have to be able to turn it on and off when called upon, because you got about 15 seconds to make an impression on somebody. If you ever get an opportunity to talk to a producer on the phone or on a Zoom call, you better make it count,” Drew said.
You can see these two brothers race the grocery aisles on Supermarket Sweep, airing on ABC, Sunday, Nov. 14, at 8 p.m. Central.
