CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. (CLARKSVILLENOW) – Drivers who’ve been detouring around Dunbar Cave Road for the last couple of months will have at least a couple more weeks to go.

The bridge replacement project on Dunbar Cave Road is taking longer than expected, and the road is not opening today, despite earlier projections.

“I know we are all very anxious to have Dunbar Cave Road re-opened, and we hope to have that accomplished soon,” said an update on the Street Department’s Facebook page Monday afternoon. “Currently, there are some utilities being re-located this week, and if all goes well, we hope to be paving next week, weather permitting. Thank you all for your patience as we try to get this project completed as soon as possible.”

The road closure and project began on Sept. 1, and the contract called for completion in 45 workdays. That meant a target completion date of Nov. 2.

The old bridge is being replaced with a box culvert, and a section of the road will be repaved. The project, which was contracted out to Concrete Structures of Charlotte, costs an estimated $517,500. Funding was supplied by the Tennessee Department of Transportation, and the bridge’s design and construction are being managed by the Clarksville Street Department.

The old concrete structure was removed, the new culvert was built, and the bridge is under construction.

Detours will remain in place for those trying to reach Swan Lake Golf Course, Dunbar Cave State Park and neighborhoods along Dunbar Cave Road.
